ISR 2026 — 15th International School on Rewriting

Excursion

The excursion will take place on Tuesday, 14 July. Following lunch in the Mercator building (where the lectures also take place), we will go to see some of the unique nature surrounding Nijmegen. You will be guided through the Stadswaard, a relatively new environment located between the Waalbrug bridge and the Ooijpolder nature reserve. The Stadswaard used to be mostly pasture due to frequent flooding of the area but has now been allowed to naturalize under the supervision of the Dutch forestry organization. In the wake of the flood risk reduction program for the Waal river, a channel has been created in the Stadswaard where a tributary of the Waal river used to be, and semi-wild grazers have been introduced – which you might see on the tour!

Please make sure that you have appropriate shoes to wear. If there are students with mobility issues, or who would rather not walk that long, there will be an alternative activity; we will plan this based on interest – so please let us know if the Stadswaard excursion does not suit you.

After the trek through the Stadswaard or alternative activity, there will be drinks and dinner for everyone in the picturesque pancake restaurant Het Hoogstraatje, with a view of the Valkhof park when the weather is nice.
